51, good health, unemployed, no insurance. Caregiver to a high risk individual but, with vaccines on the horizon and job prospects heating up, considering going w/out insurance. What do you think?

Hi all. I’m in Arizona. So when the pandemic hit, I had a fantastic job but moved in to help my very frail, sweetheart of a mom. I was still deemed “essential” but, alas, we had an epic outbreak of Covid in our office. I quit on the spot. Yes, I know, I could have waited to be laid off/fired/etc. I could have done all kinds of things, but since my job had me in constant contact with strangers (media, I interview people, etc), I have a pretty decent nest egg.

Meanwhile, health insurance is such an unholy mess that I don’t know if I want to mess with it anymore. The catastrophic short term is a maybe. Obamacare, will it even be around?

My health is very good, though that can change anytime, I get that. But it’s all such a shitstorm, that I’m now looking for a remote job that has insurance. The safety of my mom, as her only caregiver, is factoring to everything.

It’s a gamble, it’s roulette, I’ve been caught in this web before of owing tons of money due to lack of insurance, negotiating it down, going to urgent care if something happens.

I don’t know, guys. When you read the fine print on anything, none of it seems worth it. I’m 99% home now taking care of my mom’s house and, of course, her. But I’m also restless as hell, have strong prospects for writing gigs, remotely. Upcoming vaccines. Feeling a light at the end of the tunnel.

Yea, winging it is dangerous. But throwing money at worthless insurance? Not a very sexy plan B either.

Thank you for any thoughts you have, appreciate it!
