Coming back to CA from abroad after 4 months of no job and no US based health insurance

Hey!

I’m a US LPR (green card holder). I quit my job in California in Sep 2020 due to burnout, and came to Europe for 4 months to take a break and be with family. As I’ve been overseas, I bought a travel insurance that covers medical emergencies. I didn’t use COBRA to keep my work based health-insurance, and I also didn’t buy any other US based health insurance.

I will be returning to California this month and will be jobless for a while (possibly till spring or summer). What are my health insurance options and how should I go about getting it?

From searching online so far, I know of these options, but I’m not clear about which ones I’m eligible for and which one will be the best for me (I’m a healthy individual in my early 30s).

  1. Covered California – enrollment deadline is Jan 31st
    1. Do I qualify for a subsidy because I’m moving back to CA – is that a life event?
    2. Do I qualify for a subsidy because I’m unemployed? Do they look at my 2020 income to ascertain this, or my current income (which is zero)?
  2. Medi-Cal
  3. Buying directly from insurance providers like Anthem, etc.

Thank you!
