Creating a family health insurance, not just the nuclear family. But extended family as well.

While shopping around for health insurance I had an idea that I don’t know if it’s feasible or even legal.

But here goes, can I create a non-profit organization whose sole purpose is to provide health insurance to myself and extended family? What I’m trying to do here is push the overall cost down by spreading the load of insurance across the entire family. Everyone would need to pay into it of course, but the idea is since it’s a larger group it should be cheaper. Which could come with its own can of worms, but let’s side-step that for now and just focus on if this is even allowed/possible.

I tried researching this idea, but all I’m finding are articles and discussions about employer plans. Which, this definitely wouldn’t be.

So is this idea feasible? Or are there a ton of laws and regulations that just outright forbid this?

For the purpose of this discussion, most of my family lives in South Carolina and that’s where we’d be getting Health Coverage.
