Do I need a referral to see a specialist EVERY time?

Not sure if this is a dumb question, but my job got new insurance this year through BCBS Texas and the changes are confusing.

My new plan requires that I get a referral from my primary care physician to see a specialist. I’ve never had to do this before with my older provider, so my question is:

1) For ongoing Healthcare needs through a specialist (for example, if i need to see a therapist/psychologist on a regular basis) how does that work? Do I schedule a meeting with my PCP and just tell him the therapist I want to see so he can make the referral?

2) Would he have to make a referral EVERY time I want to see the therapist or specialist if it is ongoing treatment? Or can he just make a referral for ongoing therapy and then it’s covered indefinitely?

3) If I need to see multiple specialists (like a therapist and then separately another health issue) can I just ask my PCP to write referrals for several at once? Do I show up with a list and contact info for the specific in-network doctors I want to see? Or does my PCP get to decide which specialist I see?

This was all so much simpler through my old plan that didn’t require a referral / all these hoops for a specialist visit. Just don’t want a billing blindside. Any help would be appreciated!
