Doctor office didn’t check for insurance before an appointment

Hi, I’m not sure if this belongs here, I’m just not really sure where else to ask.

I recently lost my health insurance when I had to go on unpaid medical leave from work. Nobody informed me about my insurance canceling until after it was canceled.

The bigger problem is that I had a psychiatrist appointment in mid September, I paid the $50 copay at the time and then months later, they took out $250 from my account because they said I was uninsured. Isn’t the billing department supposed to tell me I’m not covered BEFORE the appointment? They waited until after my appointment, and after SEVERAL therapy sessions to tell me that I DONT HAVE INSURANCE ANYMORE. I’m in tears, I dont have this kind of money. They kept trying to charge it and it kept bouncing back because I dont have the money. OF COURSE, before my stimulus check could even be processed, they have a pending charge for that $250. They also charged me $45 here and there for a balance that only existed after they told me my insurance is gone.

Somebody please help, is what they’re doing ok?? I’m miserable, I dont have this money, that was supposed to go to REAL bills
