Health Insurance for Newborn – switching plans

Hi All,

My wife just delivered our first baby yesterday. Long story short – he was about a month early and will need to spend a week or so in the NICU for help with his breathing.

My wife is currently on my plan (UHC) through my employer. We’ve met her deductible ($6500) and our plan covers 100% after deductible. However my employer pays 0% of the premium ($730 per dependent) for any dependents I have on my plan. For this reason I will be switching my wife and newborn baby to one of the silver plans on the healthcare.gov marketplace. I can not afford the $1400 a month for insurance through my employer.

Here is my question – I know I have 30 days to get insurance for our baby. When I sign him up for a plan on the marketplace, will that retroactively cover all of the NICU charges that started the day he was born? Or will those charges for the first 30 days of his life get billed to my wife’s current insurance? From what I could find on my UHC documentation is that the baby would start his own deductible because he’s in the NICU… however i’ll be switching him over to a new insurance within 30 days. Will his care get ran through UHC and then I’ll end up paying the $6500 deductible for him, or will I be paying the deductible on the new plan that he gets on within 30 days?

Note: We live in Texas.
