Insurance payments for rehab a year later?

Hello all. 15 months ago, I checked into a rehab to deal with a budding alcohol dependence. A month before going, I had tried to get in to this same place. They told me that they took my insurance, but not my particular plan. I said ok and continued to look and continued to drink. Then, all of a sudden, my contact at that same rehab reached out, said she had cleared it with my insurance, and I could go. So I went. I thought it was odd that just a month ago my insurance was no good there but now was fine, but I needed help and figured that was most important. Got out, it worked, 15 months sober.

After I got out, I got an EOB from insurance stating that they covered the labs but that the provider was out of network so I was on the hook for the remaining 32k (!). I also got a bill from the rehab for the labs only. I forwarded the check from insurance for labs, made payable to the rehab. Odd thing is, I never heard from them again over the past year, no bills for the residential or treatment charges, nothing. I just figured they had kinda known I wasn’t covered, but didn’t want to bill me since I had emails from them saying I was and they needed me there at the time to get heads in beds, as they say.

Anyway, last week I get 6 checks from insurance for the rehab, made out to me as the other check for the labs was, totally over 30 grand. What is going on here? Why would they change their minds? Do I contact insurance first to ask why they are paying or the rehab first to let them know I have money for them? Is this chain of events as odd as I think it is? Thanks very much in advance, sorry this is so long.
