Keeping COBRA while enrolling in new employer’s coverage?

I am about to have a major surgery that would be fully covered under my current COBRA coverage (aside from the premium). However I just started a new job where the new insurance has no premium but would leave me paying a giant deductible.

I’d like to pay for my COBRA for a month or two longer, while still signing up for the insurance from my new employer. Then cancel COBRA when I don’t have crazy impending medical expenses. I still have COBRA coverage until October but I’m unsure if my past employer pays for any of my plan (other than the fully funded HRA included with my plan).

Can I keep paying COBRA while enrolling myself in my new offered plan? Thanks in advance!
