Marketplace Suddenly Canceled Health Insurance. I was paid THROUGH March at the time of cancelation.

Alright, this is a mess and no one has been able to give me any helpful info, so: hello, Reddit.

I received a notice today, from BCN of MI, that MARKETPLACE had canceled my coverage starting March 1st (today). This is NOT due to a nonpayment issue.

The policy I was on had been renewed straight through BCN at the end of 2020. There is no marketplace application with my name on it from 2021. This has made dealing with Marketplace next to impossible. BCN says they can’t do anything because they didn’t cancel it in the first place. They can see that it was canceled, when it was canceled, but the reason why is not within their wheelhouse.

Now, the Marketplace application from 2020, that found this plan in the first place, was under my mother’s name. As I was a dependent. I ended up making too much to be claimed as a dependent, but that’s not the point here (and oh, the irony). When I went to get her new coverage last month (qualifying life event) I didn’t add my name to the application. As far as I knew, I renewed through BCN, there was no 2021 Marketplace application, so I thought it was fine. NOPE.

Now, here’s the fun part. COVID is still screwing with my job. But I’m also a seasonal contractor (tutor), so claiming unemployment is a toss-up, cause I don’t usually work in certain months, just based on demand. I am trying to get a new gig going (writing), but starting anything new is slow. Point being, I don’t make enough to qualify for Marketplace coverage. I get funneled into Medicaid, which is not an option (it literally covers 0 of my meds/conditions). Marketplace said they may be able to reinstate my plan, but then my idiot lovely mother got on the phone (cause it was her application, remember) and said “well she doesn’t make any money” so now it’s, they may be able to reinstate coverage, but it will be full price. Which makes my $270 plan nearly $700. I don’t think I need to explain why that’s an issue.

I just…don’t know what to do. Or how to fix this. I/we/my household was making my premium payments. We had already paid for my March coverage (that should be returned, but not the point). I thought I had circumvented Marketplace this year by renewing a plan I already had. Am I seriously just screwed here? I can’t afford this policy at full price and I won’t/don’t qualify for Marketplace coverage at the moment. Do I have any other options? Thank you, in advance. Let me know if more info is needed.

I’ve copied the text of the letter I received below. It is from BCN, not the Marketplace. The text of the letter I received reads:

Your Marketplace health care coverage has been terminated.

Dear elf,

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has terminated your Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan or Blue Care Network contract effective March 1, 2021 because you requested a change to your plan benefit for yourself or members on your policy.

This means neither you nor any of the individuals below have access to benefits.

Who’s impacted:

elf

Because individual polices are prepaid, coverage cancellations don’t reflect negatively on your credit or standing with us. You will be refunded any premiums paid for coverage after the terminatioin date.

If you have any questions, or to find out if you’re eligible to enroll for coverage through a special enrollment period, contact the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596.

Sincerely,

Individual Membership and Billing Department.
