Paid self pay but insurance sent me a check for more

New insurance was supposed to start Feb 1 but employer didn’t send over my registration and had an appt I couldn’t reschedule until it was fixed. I paid self pay amount same day at the Dr and then filed a claim to insurance since it was a mistake that I wasn’t covered at time of appt. Insurance just approved my claim but are sending me a check for the amount they would have been charged by the Dr, which is way more than I paid. Insurance says they have to process they claim for the amount the provider would be them so the difference is between the provider and me.

Where do I go from here? It feels wrong to cash this check for more than I paid but I don’t owe the Dr any more money. Would they insurance have sent a letter to Dr stating the claim was filed and should I therefore be expecting a new bill from Dr?

Any ideas? TIA
