Risks to using insurance for therapy?

I have never used insurance for therapy before – I’m trying to figure out how risky it is to use my insurance for in network coverage, and thus have a “pre existing” condition (mental illness) on my record forever.

From my understanding, health insurance companies can’t technically discriminate for pre existing conditions. But what are the chances that they could charge more or deny coverage because I have a mental illness on record?

Is there some way I can get around needing a diagnosis and still get therapy, while only paying a copay??
