United Healthcare – Understanding what I owe

Without getting too detailed, I was in the hospital and saw a doctor. I then received a few bills. When I log into my insurance this is what I see for each claim

Amount Billed – $X

Plan Discount – $Y

Plan Paid – $Z

You Owe = $X-Y-Z

The thing is this: The “Plan Discount” and the “Plan Paid” vary wildly from claim to claim. These are all in network claims, but for some, the Plan Discount is large, for others, tiny. For some claims, the Plan Paid covers most of the remainder. For others, it’s literally $0.

I understand the basic mechanisms of health insurance, but not the details of why. The Plan Discount is…what? The discount negotiated with the provider for that claim? And then Plan Paid is…what? The amount my specific plan will cover?

I may have just answered my own questions by writing this post, but I would just like to confirm whether or not this is correct.

Thanks
