What is the difference between the “Age 29” law and COBRA for continuing health insurance in NY past age 26?

I turned 26 last month and my current employer does not offer me health insurance. I was a dependent on my father’s health insurance plan and I meet all the criteria for the “Age 29” law:

  1. Be unmarried;
  2. Be 29 years of age or under;
  3. Not be insured by or eligible for comprehensive (i.e., medical and hospital) health insurance through his or her own employer;
  4. Live, work or reside in New York State or the health insurance company’s service area; and
  5. Not be covered under Medicare.

I received a letter in the mail from my father’s union that handles the health insurance stating that I can elect to extend my coverage for an additional 36 months by filling out and mailing back the COBRA election from and a monthly premium which turns out to be a lot of money.

I was reading this: https://www.dfs.ny.gov/consumers/health_insurance/faqs_age29_young_adult_option

and to me it looks like COBRA coverage is different from the “Age 29” law passed in NY State, are these two different ways to continue my health insurance coverage? Where can I find how much the premiums are for the “Age 29” law?
