Most of people said if you’re under 26 you can be on your parent’s plan. The current insurance I have is Fidelis Care Essential Plan, that one my parents enrolled me in – I thought I was under their plan but reading it further it is an individual plan. We moved to the US around 5 years ago, but my dad retired (bc of my country’s retirement age is earlier than the US) so we had to find a medical insurance plan. I don’t think my parents know 100% of how this plan is set up bc a friend helped them with it.
This one I like because I didn’t need to pay any premium, and I just used it to do dental cleaning and covid tests.
My previous job was paying 18/hr- and I started working around May, so on my tax return I was still making under the 24k income limit (which I had no idea they had). Somehow this plan also automatically enrolls me every year, which is weird considering they send me mail to re-enroll.
I recently got a new job that pays 60k base (around 27/hr) and they offer medical PPO and HDHP with HSA. I’m considering the HDHP since I barely go to the doctor’s, and my employer offers $250 seed for HSA.
I’m thinking of getting some care for my TMJ (but I’ve lived with it for a couple of years now anyways even though my dentist said it’s clacking pretty harsh- so if I have to pay a lot I’d probably skip) and talked to a dental office receptionist that said even if you do have medical insurance from employer, you should still use the Essential Plan first since you won’t have to pay for any copays.
Honestly, I would rather keep my Fidelis Care, cause I barely use it, but it seems like I might no longer qualify(?). But I am not sure if they even need me to update anything since they never asked for any further information.
My question is: 1. Can I just STAY in the Essential Plan? 2. Can I keep my current Essential Plan whole enrolling in the HDHP? 3. If no, do I need to do anything anywhere apart from enrolling in the new plan? Eg. stop the essential plan. 4. Any advice that I should take into consideration before enrolling? 5. Why is US healthcare system so confusing ;_;
Any insight to help me out would be awesome, thanks!
