Uh oh, that’s correct. I left my employer 10mo ago for a new company. Enrolled in COBRA (Anthem PPO) on my way out the door and forgot about it.
My current employer sent me a notice in the mail indicating that I had duplicate coverage and that’s when I identified there was an issue.
Anthem confirmed that I was enrolled (showed me the paperwork that I signed) at the cost of $1,200/mo. Anthem acknowledged that they had a system error and never once requested payment.
24hrs after I got off the phone with Anthem they uploaded a lump sum $13k invoice to my account as there was no previous billing history.
The only claims paid out by COBRA during this term were routine doctor visits and pharmacy bills for my spouse—anywhere that we forgot to update our info with my new employers plan. I never used it myself.
Am I on the hook for everything?
Any chance my current medical plan Blue Cross Blue Shiel (Michigan) will help me out?
TLDR: Forgot that I signed up. All claims were paid by COBRA although I never got billed until I made them aware of it. How can I minimize costs, if at all.
