Hello all. My girlfriend and I are college students. We live together and she is on Medicaid.
Applying for student financial aid (FAFSA), we have realized that we are both still considered “dependent of our parents” until we reach age 24.
The university she attends offers to pay the remaining balance of tuition if you are a Pell Grant recipient. I make 32k a year and would likely qualify on my own, but with my parents income I do not either.
One work around for this is if we get married we become independent on financial aid. This would likely allow us both to qualify for student aid.
The problem is, my girlfriend is on Medicaid (Ohio Molina) and without it cannot afford mental health care. Is there a way around this? She does not make enough to even file taxes (less than 12k), and qualifies as of right now for it. Is there a way to file taxes if we did this in which she could keep benefits? (Married filing separate?). Thanks!
