First, thanks for existing. I really could use some help here.
Last year, quit my job (God I miss it) to become a caregiver to my mother during the pandemic. No regrets as far as caring for my mom, she is an absolute sweetheart and has no one else. So here I am.
I have a healthy savings, been living off that while I’m with her. She just had her second vaccine but is now too frail to care for herself. So I’m looking at remote work so I can continue to help her. Strong prospects brewing but nothing happening yet.
- ACA. I need to have an income to qualify. I do not. AHC looked at that zero income, kicked me to AHCCS (AZ Medicade).
- AHCCS (AZ MediCade). Haven’t applied but called them today to see what I needed to apply. They made it clear that my assets, my savings, disqualified me. Also, while my mom and I are completely financially independent of each other, they said they would take her assets (healthy) under consideration because we live under the same roof. She pays me nothing, we have separate taxes, I’m draining my savings until a job pans out.
- Short term insurance is far from ideal. I’ll buy it, I am healthy but am very worried, from stories I am reading online, that it won’t cover me if I become ill which defeats the purpose. Again, I’m healthy but we all know how that can change.
So I’m lost. I need insurance but am a ping pong ball from Obamacare and Medicade.
How do you get it with zero income but savings in the bank? My savings is my life savings and I’m not rich. Buying my own insurance is going to sting badly.
Have I fallen through the cracks or am I missing something. If you can help me from jumping off a cliff, that would be much appreciated. Thanks for any advice.
