Quitting full-time job to go freelance — best option(s) to avoid a gap in coverage?

I just submitted my notice at my current job (which is how I currently get health insurance). My insurance will expire on Feb 28th. I am starting a new freelance job on March 1st. I am hoping to be full time again in April or May, but can’t say for sure. Because of this, I think getting Obamacare is probably the best option (vs. COBRA), but I went to do so today and can’t prove my qualifying life event (leaving job) because my coverage hasn’t expired yet. It only lets you enter a past date (for when your coverage expired). It appears that I have to wait until 3/1 before I can submit my application, meaning I would have a gap in coverage.

I partake in high-risk sports, so do not want any gap in coverage whatsoever.

  1. Is my best (only) option to let it expire, and buy COBRA retroactively if I get injured on March 1st/2nd/etc.? Or should I say my coverage expired on 2/21 (yesterday) so I can submit the application prior to coverage ending?
  2. How fast can I get Obamacare coverage after submitting the paperwork?
  3. I currently am moving around a lot with the whole remote-work thing. If I change states every month or so, would that invalidate my Obamacare coverage where I declare I live in x state?

Age 29, single, state ???, Income: currently 125k, freelance is 16k / mo, after that may be 65k / yr.
