How do visits show up on insurance bills?

Hi! I just found out that I’m pregnant which is exciting but at the same time I am extremely nervous!

I am 22, live in Connecticut, and still am under my mother’s insurance; we have United Healthcare through her work. On my insurance card, it says that she’s listed as the Member, and my sister and I are listed as Dependents.

I know that I need to start going to an OB/GYN very soon and will need to go monthly; however, my mother is extremely strict and controlling. If she found out that I was pregnant, let alone having sex, she would lose it. She’s very emotionally unstable and I am unable to talk to her about the simplest things without her blowing up.

I know I can’t keep things a secret from her forever, nor do I want to. But in these first few months, I would like to hide it from her to avoid heartache, arguing, and fighting.

My question is this: given our insurance situation if I go to the OB/GYN, how is this presented on our insurance? Would she be able to figure out from this alone or no? And if she is, is there any way I can get around it?

In all honesty, I haven’t been to the doctors in years since I was maybe 19 or 20 (which I know is bad but can’t change the past now), so I’m not sure how services are billed, what’s the description, etc. So if anyone has any advice or knowledge I would really appreciate it!! Thank you so much!!
