Is there any way to “fight” paying a claim that was denied?

I just had my second daughter 2/17/21. My pregnancy had a lot of complications and my insurance paid right under $80,000 for all of my prenatal care, csection, and care afterwards. I owe about $4,000. $2,500 of that is from a claim for a specific genetic test that was denied because it needed pre-approval.

I didn’t know the test needed pre-approval. I had an amniocentesis done that was deemed medically necessary and that testing was approved and covered. Then the genetic counselor offered a test to look at the specific gene that would tell us if my baby had cystic fibrosis or not, so I said ok let’s do it. I just assumed (I know, I know) that it would be like the other testing and just be approved. Wrong.

I feel like my insurance has already paid a very large amount of money and I am thankful to have such good insurance but my daughter is going to have crazyyy medical bills. There was a neonatologist and two pediatric surgeons in the OR at her birth. She had surgery for a jejunal atresia and is in NICU for possibly a month. The pediatric surgeons still see her daily and probably will for a couple more weeks or so. So being able to save an extra $2,500 to go towards her care would be really nice if it’s possible.
