Hi everyone,
I JUST moved to GA from NY for a new job that I started on 3/1.
Previously while I was in NY I paid out of pocket for a NY ACA Exchanged Health Insurance Plan. At my time of application and enrollment it was already the 11th of the month. However, upon request they DID allow me to back date until the start of August. I was willing to pay the extra premium because of Covid and the fact that I was returning to an IN PERSON and in office job. During 2021 enrollment I qualified for financial assistance for coverage and enrolled in NY Medicaid.
I left NY with a Medicaid plan that I started on 1/1/21. Obviously a NY Medicaid plan could not be used in GA and I am looking for coverage again until 5/1/21 when my employer provided plan starts.
In the whirlwind effort of getting myself down to GA and starting the job, I did not start looking into signing up for a healthcare.gov plan for GA until today. I called Healthcare.gov customer service and I was told that the federal exchange DOES NOT allow backdating.
I am very frustrated at this point because I am now working in office and I am at an elevated risk level for COVID and I am being told I cannot backdate like I did in NY. If it weren’t for COVID I would not be bothering with paying for temporary health insurance at all, but I want to ensure that I am covered should I need testing or get admitted for hospital care from it.
When I questioned the Customer Service Rep further he said I could try and appeal the start date, but that I would have had to have a phone record of attempts to contact them prior to or on 3/1 to allow this.
Can anyone give me some advice on how likely or even possible it is to appeal a start date and get coverage?
If this isn’t possible are there NON ACA Exchange plans I can pay for out of pocket that I can sign up for that would cover me for in patient treatment for COVID?
