Dad had cancer and insurance is overpriced

Back story: My dad is an immigrant who isn’t fluent in English. So I’ve now become responsible for figuring out everything from insurance to all things concerning treatment. Since I’m fluent in English, he just assumes that I know everything about the system. I don’t. It’s exhausting. I’m overwhelmed with him relying on me and calling me with any and every question that I just don’t have an answer to.

My dad recently was diagnosed with a late stage cancer and took a leave from work. He’s expected to get 6 months of chemo. He’s collecting through his works leave of absence. He has insurance through his work. But the bills are stacking up between unexpected ER visits, chemo, bloodwork, etc.

Ideally, we would like to get masshealth for him but bc he has insurance through his job, he didn’t qualify. I can’t cancel his insurance through work bc the enrollment period isn’t until 1/2022 unless you have a qualifying life event like marriage, divorce, adoption. Cancer diagnosis is not a qualifying life event.

So now what? He can’t afford to stay on his work insurance but can’t change his coverage so that he can get masshealth. Is he better off quitting his job? We don’t actually know if he’ll ever go back to work as it’s only been a few months of chemo at this point. Chances are he will not be able to go back to his 12 hour shifts.
