Insurance Refusing to Pay for Medication

I have pretty good health insurance through my husband’s company and find that they’re relatively easy and pleasant to work with. Until today.

I broke my foot two and a half weeks ago and my doctor prescribed me Tylenol 3, one time per day for 30 days. The Rx is written so that I have to refill it weekly. The first and second times I filled it there was no problem. Today I requested the refill online and the pharmacy called me to tell me my doctor has to authorize the refill. Huh? This is new but whatever. I called my doctor and they said they’d take care of it.

Later I checked the pharmacy website and my Rx still said “in progress” so I called the pharmacy. Now they tell me my insurance company won’t pay for it. I was so confused but I asked if I could just pay cash. I was told no because it’s a controlled medication.

So I called my doctor’s office back and asked them if they have any idea why the insurance company would just decide to no longer pay for a medication I’ve been taking for two weeks. They were as confused as I was. The receptionist said she’d call the insurance company but by then it was late in the day so I won’t know anything until tomorrow.

I’m just baffled that an insurance company can dictate when I can and can’t take a medication my doctor prescribed for me as he deemed necessary. Then I can’t circumvent the insurance company by paying cash?

And it certainly isn’t as if this is a crazy expensive medication.

Has anyone experienced something like this? TIA.

Edit to add I live in Hawaii.
