Got two bills for a single ER visit after being sexually assaulted. One for $1,000 digitally, and one for $1,900 in the mail. Why do I have to pay for STD testing after being sexually assaulted? I am at a loss here. Help me please.

They gave me four of the same pill, a shot with lidocaine (because the shot is flooringly painful as the nurse told me), and tested me for four common STD’s. How on Earth does this equate to almost THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS in medical bills? I live with my mom, they promised me they wouldn’t send anything to my house, and I don’t want her to know. Not yet at least. Now I’ve got one bill digitally, by text, and a second in the mail, and luckily she was out of town for the past week, but if I haven’t gotten the mail tonight she might have seen the bill. She is incredibly snoopy like that. They even sent her an email, and I have no idea how of why they had her email if they didn’t use her insurance to do anything to this massive crippling bill. My car is in need of many things right now and I’m trying desperately trying with my stimulus money and the money I’ve saved to keep it in shape. I can’t pay this bill, and I asked them if it would be an ungodly amount before they did anything, they said no. I feel not only violated, but now betrayed by this country. How can I possibly be charged such an exorbitant amount of money for something that wasn’t even my fault? I submitted evidence to try and make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone by the same person again. I did something I was extremely uncomfortable with for the sake of others, and now I’m left completely blindsided by this curse of a number.

What do I do? I have nobody to come to with this. The bills are due in late April and I need to figure something out by then. I’m three months into my first job, things were looking up for once, I was even planning to move out and into my own apartment after I built up enough for 6 months rent, and now that is nearly impossible for the foreseeable future, and our current building is being sold to the highest bidder by July. What the hell. I think I must have killed a puppy in a past life to have deserved this.

Anything at all, any suggestions whatsoever. I see this sub isn’t too active, but at this point I have little other options for advice. I know you can get them to forgive bills, or allow monthly installments, which I might have been reluctantly okay with for the first $1,000 bill, but now it’s tripled, and I’m left absolutely dumbfounded. The medication alone (FOUR OF THE SAME PILL) was $600. I understood the $1,000 ER visit bill, as ridiculous as that is, but this feels cruel.

Help me, please.
