Double Coverage Quandary – How can we dis-enroll?

My wife has coverage through her employer (HMO) and I have coverage (HSA) through mine. We got married in October and I added her to my policy (I payed the double coverage penalty). We did not drop her policy at the time as she pays no/$0 for the premium.

Ignorantly we believed that we could pick which insurance we would use as a primary. We now realize that her policy will be primary and its not up to us.

We are expecting massive medical bills later this year and would really like all of it to be billed through my HSA policy. My employer said that if she can dis-enroll from her insurance then my insurance will become her primary (and only insurance).

Are there any strategies for her to dis-enroll? Her employer has told her that she can’t drop her insurance until open enrollment (December) or a life event. We contemplated moving her to working PT (less than 30 hours) but that isn’t a viable option for us.

Open to any ideas on how we might be able to make my insurance primary for her?

Thanks for any input you may have! ๐Ÿ™‚
