Weird Insurance Problem

Hello,

I recently re-enrolled in school back in January and apart of being a college student in NY is that you have to have health insurance. The school automatically enrolls you in their insurance plan that you can opt out of, I already had health insurance through my parents. When I opted out of it they said there was an issue and to email them, which I did back in January. Due to their high email volume they said they would get back as soon as possible and gave me a reference number. I never got an insurance card in the mail.

Fast-forward to today I received an explanation of benefits in the mail from the school’s insurance with all my doctors visits from January to now. I never gave the doctors office the school’s insurance information and when I look to see what I had on file it is my regular insurance that I have had the whole time.

My question is how did the office get the insurance information if I never gave it to them and how do I go around fixing this? The school’s insurance is way out of my budget which is why I was on my parents to begin with and I dont want to make it look like I was using the school’s plan instead of my parents plan.
