Hi, I am currently unemployed due to my health condition that requires orthopedic surgery, and have a choice between Medi-cal and ACA. The problem is, most doctors I want to see only take group plans. Cost isn’t an issue and I want the best outcome since this surgery will restructure my hips for the rest of my life. Is there any way around the restrictive nature of ACA plans, or do I have to find a crazy workaround? (moving, getting full time underpaid employment in an unrelated role, etc.). It seems so bizarre that I cannot pay more for better care. Wish I knew this beforehand so I could’ve switched jobs to a bigger company (I was at a startup). To make matters more complicated, I am with Medi-Cal which apparently is managed at the county level that forbids me from going to a surgeon outside the county? Or am I being lied to? I don’t even know anymore. I’ve been given so much contradictory information so far and have even been uninsured for a month because of miscommunication between all the middle men.
TLDR: (good) surgeons only accept group PPO plans; is there any way to get in on these plans as an unemployed person?
more info: 28M, Southern California, no income (but $70K+ saved up), currently have Kaiser HMO Medi-Cal plan that I’m not quite satisfied with.
