Hello! I am very happy that I found this sub. I previously worked in a doctor’s office and helped people navigate the insanity that is health insurance in the US. I did a lot of things from getting insurance companies to pay for medications and services, to helping people choose plans. I have recently joined a bunch of groups for type 1 diabetes and it drives me absolutely NUTS when people post stuff like “My insurance won’t pay for X, where can I get it for cheap out of pocket?” It makes me want to tear my hair out! Your insurance will probably pay for it if you ask correctly.
When I was at my previous job, I wrote a number of documents to help patients because I couldn’t find adequate information anywhere online. I have had a lot of difficulty actually getting people to read the insurance 101 document because it’s 8 pages long. However, the people that have read it say that it’s extremely funny (I like to think so). I also made a worksheet for calculating costs and comparing plans. You may need to read the insurance 101 document first to be able to fully understand what you are supposed to do in each category, but you might not need to. The link is here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ZpJTh1A0aDeFk76SLekgEnjgLbHmGqvD?usp=sharing
Finally, if you have questions or need specific advice about a situation, I am more than happy to help. Unlike most people who hate having to deal with health insurance, it’s actually one of my favorite things (I’m a huge weirdo). Feel free to comment here or send me a direct message. I’m generally around and will respond fairly quickly. The email attached to the google drive is a throwaway, so sending a message there won’t reach me.
