What’s the point of vision insurance? Is there something I’m not getting? Seems like a marketing scam.

All this time I thought vision insurance was to cover ailments with eyes. But after experiencing an eye issue recently that required me to see an eye doctor, I learned the treatment was covered by my medical insurance instead. Which then got me wondering…what does vision insurance even cover??

Apparently it’s to cover your yearly eye exam, glasses, and contacts? And it doesn’t even cover the whole thing and has many exclusions/limits.

These things though…aren’t that expensive if you just pay normally, especially in recent years where online retailers have popped up. I can get a pair of glasses from online retailers for $30. My contacts cost $30-50 a year or less by shopping around online. The exam costs like $75-125.

And this assumes you need to update your prescription, glasses, etc. every year which many people don’t.

This isn’t that much money and nowhere close to the amount necessary to justify taking insurance out for it. They might offer a discount on LASIK, but you could probably get them to apply a similar discount without insurance anyway. Or…just shop around again for another lasik specialist. There’s a lot of them these days. And even then, LASIK is (ideally) a one time thing, not something that you take out insurance for every year. I’ve heard the vision insurance discount is only up to 20-25% anyway.

I just don’t really understand this. Like why would someone spend ~$20/month or even more for this type of coverage. You’ll probably just breakeven assuming you’re replacing glasses every year. But the vision insurance will require you to buy certain frames/lenses and limit which providers you can go to. If there is savings, it’s not significant.

With dental coverage at least, it’ll cover things in case more work is necessary besides for your 2-3 yearly cleanings/exams. But for vision insurance, if there is an eye complication, then medical insurance takes care of it.

What am I not getting here?
