A few years ago a person at my work convinced the CEO to adopt a health insurance plan for our work. It is only affordable to the top paid people. Most people opted out because the price was horrendous and only benefited people making 6 figures. She advised me to simply opt out and tell the marketplace my work did not offer coverage and that no one could legally find out.
My accountant couldnt figure out why I was getting subsidies; and after explaining it to her she strongly advised I get legit. So now I can go on the marketplace and pay nearly 30% of my income for a family of 4 on insurance. We can in no way afford it this year. Maybe by november I will have the raise Ive been waiting for. Should I risk it? I know the consequences but whats the reality of being audited in this manner.
