Hi, I’m 25 years old, turning 26 in June, and my original plan was to lose coverage from my parents’ plan when I turned 26 and switch to my employer’s plan. Unfortunately, there was some miscommunication between my parents and me where they thought I had to enroll in my employer’s plan at the beginning of the year. Because of that, I currently don’t have insurance and found out I can’t switch to my employer’s plan when I turn 26 because the qualifying life event to change benefits is “losing coverage” and not the event of turning 26. I believe I am able to get access to coverage through Covered California, but these plans are a bit pricey. Would somebody know if I am able to get coverage through Covered California briefly, then cancel, and use that as a “qualifying life event” to change my benefits from work? I’m also not sure if there are any fees associated with signing up and cancelling in a short timeframe. The costs I’m keeping in mind right now are the tax penalty from not having coverage and the plan itself, but if anyone can advise on anything else I’m missing that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
