Need insurance for herniated disc surgery – is sidecar worth it? Or is there better alternatives?

My boyfriend has a herniated disc. He’s gone through all the non-surgery treatments (with the exception of a steroid injection). Finally went and got an MRI, found out exactly what’s wrong, and doctor immediately said surgery is the next step, and he needs to get insurance. They didn’t have high hopes for the steroid shot. He’s in considerable amounts of pain daily, so we’re hoping to get this figured out soon.

We’re in Texas, 78664 zip. He’s 36 and self-employed (brings in ~3k monthly). We’re not married, and even then the insurance I’ve been offered through my job is junk. Neither of us understand health insurance past “pay this monthly, pay until deductible and pay co-payment”. He’s gone through marketplace, and I went and looked at what they offered as well. Looking at $300-400 a month, plus 8k deductibles, and while I don’t know exactly what else would be added for surgeries, there’s definitely more “pay this” for in/out patient and other things associated with surgery.

While neither of us know exactly how much the surgery would cost out of pocket WITHOUT insurance (and I told him that’s what he needs to find out), it’s most probably still out of our range.

Is sidecar a viable option? I don’t see a lot about it from real people, which worries me. If it isn’t, is there another healthcare that would be a good choice for his situation? Or something that we need to aim for through the marketplace? Any help would be amazing – we’re in over our heads with this.
