Dad had stroke, looking for insurance/hospice help

Dear Reddit,

Looking for advice regarding end of life (EOL) care for our father (United States)

Basically the situation as best I can summarize is this:

-Dad had a stroke -We were recommended hospice at the hospital due to his declining position – even signed papers to put him in -They changed their mind and decided he wasn’t imminently dying, he might live a while -Discharged him to a rehab facility (covered) -After 2 weeks in the rehab facility he is now losing care and must pay out of pocket (~350/day). Only alternative available is possibly VA which would be at least partially covered since he is a veteran.

It’s worth noting that the coverage was denied after he showed no signs of improving in rehab. We were warned this could happen but it appears he has basically plateau’d and will not recover any further.

He currently has no feeling or movement in one half of his body and is dead weight. He needs full nurse care. He also has advanced dementia/alzheimer’s so he is really not having a great quality-of-life now.

Is there ANYTHING more I can be doing to get more care paid for other than investigating VA options? He never, ever wanted to live like this. I am 100% fine with dedicating his money to great care for him, but if there’s anything I can be doing to save him money or get additional care covered by the insurance he’s been paying on for years and years. It’s absolutely depressing to watch his life saving drained by healthcare vampires.
