I’m undertaking a research project about mental health stigma and families. I’m in the UK so I’m not familiar with the specifics of American health insurance practices, and wonder if I could get some advice on the following scenario please:
An otherwise healthy 16 year old has been diagnosed with depression by the family doctor. They are not considered to be in any danger to themselves or others, but a low dose of anti depressants has been prescribed for an initial period of 3 month subject to further review. The individual is fully covered on their family’s health insurance, however they wish to keep their condition private from their parents in order to avoid worrying them.
1) As a minor, would conversations between an individual and their doctor remain confidential?
2) Would there be an option for the individual to pay for any medication, consultation or treatment themselves (e.g. directly to the medical practice or pharmacy) in order to avoid any charges showing up on a health insurance statement?
Many thanks in advance 🙂
