Over the last few years, I have gone from “healthcare in America is annoying” to “healthcare in America is designed to be complicated in order to screw people out of paying for stuff”. I’ve had a litany of “this provider is out of network”, “you need authorization before having that procedure”, and other exceedingly frustrating explanations that come after the fact.
So, going forward, I plan on asking some questions whenever I need to do anything more than a routine office visit.
For this procedure, is this provider in network for my insurance? For this procedure, are there any other providers that will be involved? Are they in network for my insurance? Are there any prior authorizations that are needed for this procedure? What is this procedure going to cost? Can I get all of the above in writing?
I’m absolutely sure I’m going to get push back from the offices for doing this, but I am also tired of this continually happening.
Are there any other questions that I should ask before I have any medical procedures done? Should I NOT ask any of the above questions?
