Friend with terminal illness wondering how he’ll continue to get care when he’s unable to work

I’ll try to be as brief as possible.

A close friend of mine has a high-grade glioma in his brain and the life expectancy for 5 years is around 5%. The initial surgery in September to remove as much as possible went pretty well, but we’re still guessing he’s looking at maybe 3 years. It’s unclear how many of those years will be of decent quality as seizures and the re-growing tumor increase the severity of his symptoms. We are looking into clinical trials (he’s flying to Boston next week to explore options he’s a candidate for) but we’re trying to cover our bases.

He’s primarily concerned with what his options for medical insurance are after he becomes unable to work (he works in finance from home) and I share that concern but with the additional focus of me not wanting him to have to spend his remaining months sitting at his desk working because he has to. Fortunately his work is being as awesome as possible and affording him every accommodation and all of the time off he needs for medical related things.

Essentially we’re trying to figure out if he has any realistic coverage options after he stops working. Is he even able to get coverage since he has a pre-existing condition? I’m not sure what else to add/ask, so I’ll answer any questions I can. He’s an otherwise healthy guy in his early 30s and has been saving aggressively for retirement his whole life, but if he has to pay for medicine out of pocket that’ll dry up fast. We’re in Colorado, if that matters.

Thank you all for your help.
