The name of the insurance is Vital Care Select Elite – PHCS.
I was switching jobs and needed insurance to cover a 1-month gap. I was shopping around for something cheaper than COBRA.
Input my information on a website and started getting tons of spam calls. One sounded trustworthy (at first) so I went with it. The guy claimed to be a broker. He didnt even say who he was working for until I pressed – he worked for National Health Enrollment Center (I don’t know if that was also a lie but I looked up this organization afterwards and they have a lot of complaints). He introduced me to a plan that was $200 cheaper than COBRA. I was hesitant but he said 2 things that pushed me to buy:
The plan is officially approved and sponsored by my state, CT (as I later learned, no such thing) The open enrollment period ends on Monday May 24 (which is an outright lie. The enrollment period for CT ends in August).
I stupidly bought into his lies and gave my credit card info. I even provided the last 4 digits of my SSN – he said he needed it to verify my health conditions. They would run that in their database and I wouldn’t need to get a physical exam. I then was promptly charged and given a digital insurance card and access to an online portal.
This is where things got very confusing. I don’t actually know which company/plan I’m dealing with.
The plan is called the Vital Care Select Elite plan, which utilizes the PHCS network. The PHCS network logo is on the card.
The portal to log on is a generic name https://benefitsportal.net/member/ and once logged in says I’m an NIIA member which is National Individual Insurance Agency. Claims are handled by yet another party called BlackHawk Claims Services. The web of names raised a huge red flag.
I called the Customer Service number. As soon as I told them I wanted to cancel, they hung up on me. I then tried again several times, no answer, but then switched to another phone and someone picked up (shady much? It seems they blocked my phone number). I asked them to cancel my membership. They said they did it and I should be getting a confirmation email soon, but I haven’t received anything so I doubt my membership was canceled.
I’m especially upset by the lies the insurance broker told me to dupe me into buying the insurance, but there’s not much I can do about him. If I dont get a refund, I plan to file a dispute with my credit card company, but I’d rather cancel the plan. Has anyone had any experience with this insurance?
