I have an insurance plan with a $100 copay per PET/CT/MRI scan.
Last month I had a scan at Loma Linda Hospital and as is becoming commonplace, the hospital broke out the charges for this one scan into 2 separate bills with 2 separate procedure codes and submitted them to insurance separately.
My insurance plan processed the bills as two separate CT scans and showed TWO $100 copays for a single visit.
This practice is being repeated by medical centers all over the country. They charge a facility charge for each doctor visit as a separate line item. If you have a $25 copay for a visit that $25 should be the total charges you pay, but these companies are generating a separate bill for the use of the room. My insurance company is processing those facility charges separately when they should be part of the doctor visit. Next thing medical centers will start charging separately for room ventilation and lighting.
Keep a close eye on the billing for any services you have done to make sure you aren’t paying multiple times for a single doctor visit or procedure.
