I’m about to start a new job in California and it provides an Anthem HMO plan for the family with low deductibles and $0 premiums. We travel every now and then and I’m concerned about the lack of coverage for anything beyond an emergency room visit when out of the California network. Any type of injury or illness requiring an inpatient stay would likely be catastrophic in the charges. Not a likely event but I don’t like the idea of being completely unshielded from that and having coverage would give me peace of mind.
My future employer has a PPO family option as well with a reasonable premium ($90 per pay period) but I’m wondering if it would be better to instead take the free HMO family option from my future employer and then get double covered with my spouse’s employer’s PPO family plan ($80 per pay period) since it would overall cost about the same in premiums.
It would appear to me that for about the same cost, double coverage with an HMO and a PPO should cover my bases and be better than just a single PPO plan. Any downsides I may have missed in doing this? i.e. quirks in the coordination of benefits that lead to me getting less coverage?
