Charged $4200 for lab test

I’m in an opioid maintenance program and I pay cash each visit, part of which is for a urine cup with instant results.

I was recently looking at my insurance claims page online and I saw a claim for $4200 from a lab. I never authorized this test from my doctor and it was never mentioned as a possibility in the new patient paperwork. (I’ve also not done any drugs since entering the program, btw)

My insurance didn’t pay anything towards it of course and it says I’m responsible for the full amount.

I confronted my doctor and he said they’re just looking for the odd insurance company that will actually pay it and aren’t looking to bill people whose insurance doesn’t pay. He also said if I call the lab and agree to pay $10 towards the claim, it will be considered settled.

I’m not sure I really trust that though. I’m afraid if I call, just having the conversation and being willing to pay anything will make them demand more and not drop it like they might otherwise. I also don’t want it to randomly go to collections and kill my credit. I work for a bank levy department and know how that story can go.

Has anyone had a similar experience? I do NOT have $4200 to pay towards a lab test that (surprise surprise) came up totally clean, especially when I already pay for the instant results test every visit.

What should I do?
