Wtf is MATERNITY BENEFITS?

I had to get an urgent procedure done for my reproductive health, and the office said that my insurance would cover most of it & I’d pay ~$600 out-of-pocket. I am currently a student, and I get insurance through my dad’s employer. My dad isn’t exactly the most fluent in insurance policy (none of us are tbf) and chose a plan that covers jack shit. I’m in NY rn if that helps give context.

I got a bill today and it’s $8000 dollars…are you kidding me?!

I called my insurance (United Healthcare), and they told me that my claim was denied because I don’t have something called “maternity benefits”…what lmao like if I’m a woman…doesn’t that entail that I need gynecological services? Additionally, the screening tests & gyno exam I had to get prior to my procedure were not covered. Nothing w/ OBGYN is covered. There’s nothing they can do, but they did refer me to some local funds that can help me pay. Unfortunately, I don’t think they’ll be able to because the funds are to be used at community health centers and set up PRIOR to any procedures. Also, I don’t qualify for medical assistance programs because I’m a dependent & my parents make enough to afford private insurance.

The worst part is that I found this doctor on the UnitedHealthcare website, and the website even gave me a quote for my co-pay. Also, I was in a lot of pain at the time and desperately needed the procedure. What an awesome fucking way to make it worse lol

PLEASE remember to verify your benefits guys!! It’s so cruel to expect someone to do all this administrative shit before such a needed medical procedure & when they can’t even get out of bed, but it’s the system rn & unfortunately we have to do it.

Anyway…I need suggestions for anything because $8000 is just too damn much.
