Simultaneous health coverage in the US and the UK

I have a fairly specific situation I was hoping to get some help with. Apologies is this is the wrong subreddit for such questions!

So, I have a chronic health condition for which I require very expensive medication every month. I work full-time in the US, and my employer-provided health insurance has covered the costs of this medication so far with no issues. However, I will be leaving my job soon to temporarily move to London in September and study full-time for a year (from September to April, to be exact), after which I will return to the US.

My husband is about to graduate, and will remain in the US to work while I study abroad. The last item on our long admin checklist is that of health coverage for myself. The first issue is about our health coverage between the time I quit my job (most likely mid-August) and the time my husband’s coverage kicks in (early September if he begins work in early August?). My understanding is that our coverage through my job would last until the end of the month I quit, in which case this would overlap nicely with our coverage through his job – is this correct? If not, I assume I’d need to go through COBRA until my husband’s coverage starts. If that’s the case, is there anything I need to prepare in advance?

The second question is that of coverage between September and April. I will be covered by the NHS in the UK as a full-time student, but I want to stay on my specific medication (there are several options for my condition – even though my medication is available in the UK, they might decide to put me on something cheaper), and it would be much easier to maintain continuity of care in the US rather than having to navigate an entirely new healthcare system abroad, with more referrals, specialists, diagnostic tests, etc. So, the question is, even though I would be a UK resident for 6-7 months, would I still be allowed as a beneficiary on my husband’s employer-provided plan? Or do I have to bite the bullet and start setting up doctors’ appointments in the UK through the NHS to make sure there is no lapse in my treatment?

Thanks!
