Frustrated in Pennsylvania.

Just needing to vent a little.
My wife and I lost our jobs last April due to the pandemic.
I immediately switched gears and have been successfully freelancing (video editing).
We actually had our best financial year in a decade, despite all the setbacks.
One thing we have not been able to get to work for us, however, is medical insurance.
We’re not eligible for Medicaid or any other version of assistance.
But, when we try to get insurance via Pennie (the PA health marketplace) it tells me the cheapest insurance packages are still around $800-$1100 per month.
We make less than $45k per year, and we’re supposed to spend more than 25% of that on health insurance?
Neither of us has been diagnosed with anything serious, but we’re both ‘of an age’ (late 40’s/early 50’s) and starting to feel it.
It’d be great to be covered and be able to make periodic appointments to have the Doc check under the hood and make sure everything’s working ok.
I mean, just on my side of things, I’ve got a family history of cancer (4 different kinds) and various cardiovascular diseases.
How is it that I can work hard, claw my way to the lower reaches of a middle class income (in PA), and then get told that I’d have to sacrifice $12000 before any deductibles, med costs, etc., etc., etc.??
Just so damned frustrating.
