Felt like I got scammed…

Hey guys, so I’m 28. I live in California, before I didn’t have a job but decided to get health insurance as I found out there was a way to get coverage by paying out of pocket when watching people saying getting private health insurance – covered california is better than employers insurance which makes sense to a degree.

The thing is I started my coverage in Dec. 2020, I did my checkup and check for STD, HIV, etc but haven’t done my physical annual check up yet, so I called in to see if I could do it. They told me my coverage canceled since March 1st. And that my last payment was in December. But, they kept on billing me until May as thats when I called. Idk why I waited so long or I just never checked the portal, it just never came to mind… maybe that’s my fault. I never got a notification, my agent never called me saying my coverage was billed. I’m just so confused… 2 different companies, honestly I would rather go direct than to deal with a middle man.

Why did they keep on billing me when I didn’t have coverage and how do I make a complaint? What should I do? I feel scammed by “Obama care”. If I have a business one day, I would just pay directly to Kaiser or whoever covered me.
