My wife’s employer is filing for bankruptcy. The group within the company she is working with is going to spin off as a new company. So most likely she will have a job. However, she is on work visa and there might be a brief period when she won’t be able to work(due to complexity in work visa system – totally separate discussion).
We have insurance through her employer and that is good till end of this month. It is a good health insurance. If that goes away(most likely) we will have to switch to another insurance, may be offered by my employer. Here is something that I am trying to take call on:
1) Her job loss will be qualifying event for starting my employer sponsored health plan – but can we get back to her insurance once she starts working again? or have to wait till next year?
2) Does COBRA applies in this case? and is it worth it?
3) Is market place is better option to bridge the gap(we foresee few weeks to about 6 months gap)?
Any other suggestions?
Thank you.
