I have some questions about what happens when I’ve gotten several medical bills from different providers, and I hit my deductible in the middle of paying them. I have two different scenarios that are close to real life, just not the exact numbers.
First, this year in 2021, my deductible is $3000. I’ve gotten about $4000 of bills, and just now paid up to the $3000 level. What do I do about the remaining $1000 of bills (which are split across 3-4 different providers)? Do I call each provider and ask them to re-bill my insurance now that the insurance will cover more?
Second, last year, my deductible was also $3000. I got about $5000 of bills and was only able to pay $2000 towards them before they were sent to collections. Now if I COULD have paid them off last year, I would have owed $1000 to hit the deductible, and then small amounts afterward as coinsurance. I probably would have owed about $1600 total. The debt collectors, however, want to collect the full $3000 debt that was sent to them. Is there anything I can do about that?
