Have we screwed ourselves by using secondary insurance?

Location: California, USA

Some context: my health insurance through my employer was really great so we decided to add my wife to it. She was working as well and asked to be removed from her health insurance through her employer but they said they she has to choose a plan, so she chose the worst plan (they pay her to go with this plan). It has a very high deductible ($5,000).

We switched to my great insurance because we wanted to have a baby this year. Well, we got pregnant in January and have been having all our doctor visits through my good insurance. I only just found out about “primary” and “secondary” insurance and I believe that she should not have been using my good insurance, but rather her high deductible plan.

I’ve read that the secondary insurance will always find out and then deny the claims which means we will have to pay the full $5,000 deductible for her plan. Are we absolutely screwed? I feel like I’m on the verge of a full blown panic attack.
