Changed Insurance Companies and Got Huge Bill

So, I had an injury that messed up my back and chose to go to a chiropractor to have it evaluated. I told them specifically and multiple times that I wanted to make sure my insurance covered everything completely since I didn’t want to be responsible for a bunch of co-pays and didn’t have the budget frankly. I was on my new job’s insurance, and they have a whole spine/joint care program I was enrolled in. I submitted a form that my insurance sent verifying that it was injury-related, the nature of the injury, etc. and the chiropractic office said “oh yeah, your insurance is covering everything!” Great!

Fast forward after my first two visits, I start getting emails saying my claim was processed and see that there are some $60 “you may owe” amounts after my plan discount was applied to the care. I asked the office and they once again told me I wouldn’t be responsible for that blah blah blah. I asked my insurance company and they said “well, the office is in network but you can’t pay through us, so wait and see if they send a bill but you should be fine”. I had my last treatment in early April, and just received an email on 6/29 that I owed $60 for each visit, amounting to over $1000. Lovely.

Here’s the next part of the issue: I moved cities and jobs, so I am not even on the same insurance as I was when I received the treatment and I’m not sure if I could argue anything at this point. I’m obviously upset that the office lied to me and waited over two months (they knew I was moving) to send me a bill. In the past, I have paid up front for chiropractic care! Also, they have my HSA card on file and I’m worried they will charge it. It seems that my insurance provided a “discount” rather than actual payment, but that is not what I was lead to believe and I asked very specific questions about MY financial obligations.

Anyway, should I just call the old insurance company and see what I can do? I have never received a bill so late, but I obviously don’t want it to go to collections if I don’t pay it. It’s just annoying and I’m upset that the office was so deceptive, but I can’t march in there and debate it since I live across the country now!
