State Lines and Health Insurance

Hi everyone,

I’m originally from Wisconsin, and I have a Wisconsin-based HMO health insurance through my father (Quartz Health). However, right now, I live in Ohio for grad school. I haven’t transferred residency to Ohio because I don’t plan on staying here.

I currently really need mental health services, and I was able to get into a therapy clinic I had met with before when I was going to school in Wisconsin. But when I went to my intake appointment, the therapist was hesitant, and he told me recently that his clinic had been informed that they can only provide services to someone who is in the state of Wisconsin at the time of service.

I’m on the phone with customer service right now, but I’m unsure if this is an insurance related issue, a licensing issue, something else, or a combination of it all. I feel stuck because my insurance only covers providers in Wisconsin, but I apparently cannot work with said providers if I am physically not in Wisconsin.

If anyone else has been here or knows a good next step, I would immensely appreciate it. Thank you.
