Does pregnancy change the cost of health insurance?

Hi! I (29F)am currently 15 weeks pregnant. I have been receiving OB care of this entire time but we have been paying out of pocket. We have had three appointments so far. As the appointments progress, they have gotten more expensive. The last appointment for example was around $1.3K. I signed up for Medi-Cal because I don’t make a ton of money. However, the OB we have been seeing does not accept that insurance and we would like to continue going to that practice. My boyfriend, has his own business and makes way more than I do so he was going to pay for my insurance. Of course , he isn’t my spouse so it doesn’t matter in the eyes of the insurance company.

Anyways, I requested a call from an insurance agent and he gives me pricing for different plans. It’s all super great until I tell him that I’m pregnant. The price of one insurance for example went from $271 to $477. I thought insurance companies weren’t allowed to discriminate or increase prices based on pre-existing conditions. Am I wrong?

We live in San Diego.
